Electromagnetic fields
in diagnostics and therapy
The Bio-electromagnetism Research Group at the Department of Biomedical Technology, FBME CTU, studies the interaction of electromagnetic fields with biological tissue and its use in medical diagnostics and therapy. We develop methods for microwave hyperthermia and treatment planning, microwave imaging and non-invasive thermometry, measure the dielectric properties of tissues and numerically model the propagation of electromagnetic fields and heat in the human body. Our results are validated on phantoms and in clinical practice in cooperation with hospitals and industrial partners.

8 topics · from model to clinic

Microwave hyperthermia
A clinical system for heating tumours in the pelvis, brain, head and neck that increases the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Non-invasive temperature monitoring during hyperthermia and ablation
Reconstruction of the temperature distribution in tissue from microwave measurements, without invasive probes and without MRI.

Microwave detection and classification of stroke
A portable microwave helmet that distinguishes ischaemic from haemorrhagic stroke in the field and in the ambulance.

Measurement of tissue dielectric parameters and phantom development
An affordable measurement system with a coaxial probe and anatomically and dielectrically realistic phantoms of the head, pelvis and whole body.

Radar methods in medicine
Contactless monitoring of vital signs, catheter navigation, ablation monitoring and fall detection.

Electroporation
Temporarily increasing the permeability of cell membranes with an electric field for gene therapy, cancer treatment and targeted drug delivery.

Low-field magnetic resonance imaging
A low-cost MRI scanner with a Halbach magnet of 2,500 permanent magnets for imaging the head and limbs.

Blood-flow assessment and 3D printing of hearts
Patient-specific 3D heart models for planning left atrial appendage closure and numerical analysis of thrombus risk.

Tonagena
CTU spin-off

In 2023 the Bio-electromagnetism team founded an official CTU spin-off, Tonagena s.r.o., to commercialise the technologies and devices developed in the group. The team is involved in all aspects of bringing a product to market, from development and testing through certification to production and sales. The spin-off has commercialised the TonaPulse® system, including a unique electrode system for adherent cell cultures, which is used for example at the 3rd and 2nd Faculties of Medicine of Charles University for research on irreversible electroporation in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and on gene transfection.
Besides electroporation, Tonagena is involved in custom development of microwave applicators and radar solutions for significant local companies, where it has already delivered hardware in both areas.
